Alure Home Improvements is proud to announce our partnership with Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore program. Habitat for Humanity has been helping build and rehabilitate homes since 1976. They have built over 350,000 houses around the world, providing more than 1.75 million people in 3,000 communities with safe, decent, affordable shelter. Habitat ReStores are outlets that accept donated goods for resale at a fraction of the price. Each ReStore is different but most focus on the resale of home improvement goods – furniture, home accessories, building materials and appliances. All of the money made from ReStores is put towards helping local affiliates fund the construction of Habitat homes within their communities. When replacing a kitchen, bathroom or any other remodeling project where existing products are being removed but still usable (like kitchen cabinets, appliances or other materials) Alure donates those materials to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, which otherwise would have been thrown away. In addition to helping support a great cause, this also helps Alure contribute to the “Green” movement by recycling these materials and thus reducing waste.

Alure’s VP of Operations, Doug Cornwell, was recently honored with the St. Joseph’s College Thomas A. Doherty Ethical Leadership Award. The annual award is given to an alumnus who exemplifies ethical leadership in their profession and in everyday life. Cornwell, VP of Operations for Alure Home Improvements for 15 years. In addition to overseeing Alure’s production and daily operations, Doug also played a significant role in Alure Home Improvement’s 7 projects with ABC’s hit show, Extreme Makeover : Home Edition. On each of the episodes that Alure lead for the show, Doug was personally in charge of designing and planning the home layouts to fit the space needs and desires of the different families. During the actual building on the show, Doug plays the role of project manager and oversees the entire production process for the homes built on the show. Congratulations to Doug on his achievements. “The time spent at St. Joseph’s completing my graduate work has allowed me to invest in my personal and professional growth. While continuing my education, much of my research was directed towards the continued improvement in all aspects of Alure Home Improvements. I am extremely appreciative of the support and encouragement the Alure family has given me during this time.” ~Doug Cornwell

Drafty windows, rooms that are too hot or cold and high energy bills are all but a few issues for most homeowners. A Comprehensive Home Assessment with Energy Star takes a whole house approach at improving the efficiency of the home. Making it more comfortable for the home owner while protecting the environment. The first step for any homeowner is to visit the Building Performance Institute (BPI) web site to locate an accredited Building Analyst Professional in your area. After that, here is what you can expect from the assessment:

    On entering the home, ambient carbon monoxide levels are monitored. Carbon Monoxide testing is performed on all combustion appliances in the home. The hot water and heating systems are checked for efficiency. The existing conditions of both are evaluated and inspected for proper operation, efficiency and ventilation. According to BPI standards, all combustion appliances must meet specific criteria for safety. Recommendations for new heating systems will be made if the current one is in poor working condition or is a health risk.
    A visual inspection of the home is performed. This is where the building size, structure and existing conditions will be documented. Any structural concerns such as moisture issues, mold or damage will be the first thing to look for. After inspection, the thermal envelope will be evaluated. This is where the existing insulation types and amounts in the walls, attic, basement, etc. will be checked. Existing windows and doors will be inspected for condition and performance. The envelope is then tested by conducting a blower door test. This determines the current air leakage rate of the home and helps determine the level and type of air sealing and mechanical ventilation required. The test result is compared to the Building Airflow Standard (BAS). The BAS is calculated based on several variables including the volume of air in the home, number of occupants, height, etc… In some cases additional tools will be used to pinpoint air leaks so that the resulting work scope will provide detailed instructions to correct such leaks.
    Finally, electrical use will be evaluated and recommendations made on more energy efficient products such as an Energy Star rated refrigerator or dishwasher or changing the lighting to Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFL). The contractor will then prepare a detailed report for the homeowner with a list of results from the inspection and recommendations that can be made to make for a more energy efficient home. The report will include specific recommendations with costs and the estimated energy savings that will be realized by making the improvements. The report will calculate payback periods and savings to investment ratios. At this point, the Building Analyst Professional will go over all current rebate programs, incentives and tax credits.

A “Raving Fan” experience.

September 23, 2008

Dear B,

Since our basement project has been fully completed on Thursday last week, I take this opportunity to share our experience. Right from our 4-hour long first meeting with you till completion of the project, we have nothing but all positive things to say as our overall experience.  The design you came up with did make optimum utilization of available space and changed the face of our basement making it more roomy and cozy. The entire work done has been very neat, clean and totally consistent with the time frame and excellent quality that you had confidently assured in our first meeting.

The team that worked on our project comprised of T. O., A and G. They were all very punctual, courteous and highly reliable. You just can’t find anything negative in their work, temperament and behavior. T is an outstanding team leader and did his job with passion and did it exceptionally well. Your electrician team comprised of T and M also did their job quite competently.

I am very happy and glad that S, my wife and I decided to have the project done by Alure.

As you know, my wife was out of country when the project started. She returned home this morning and the first thing she did was to walk into the basement and see how it came along. She couldn’t believe her eyes and was ecstatic looking at the brand new face of the basement. She too is highly impressed by the precision, quality and workmanship.

And how can I not mention something about P and J from your admin department. Though in the back stage, they both did their part efficiently to get the project started timely. Consistent with Alure’s tagline, you all did bring your experience at our home and we are happy and satisfied.

S and my wife join me in appreciating the great work done by Alure and saying a big THANK YOU to all.

Sincerely

a

A cool fresh start.

September 23, 2008

A few months ago, after living through the darkest year of our lives, I decided that my son and I needed a fresh start. My son was so upset we were selling our home and downsizing to a condo. I realized to make the new space work for us we would have to take on three major home improvement projects; finishing the basement, and re-doing the kitchen and baths. As I began researching contractors, I was drawn to Alure. I was impressed with Alure’s 60 year professional reputation and their commitment to giving back to the community with their involvement in many local charities. I knew this was a company that I would “fit” with. Alure has exceeded all of my expectations.

From the moment I began working on my Owens Corning Basement with Designer Nick , I knew I made the right decision. Nick’s knowledge, professionalism and pleasant personality took my ideas and my son’s dream of a “cool” space for him to be with his friends, and turned them into reality. Production Supervisor James and Head Installer Rob were also reliable and professional. I felt safe leaving them and their crew in my home. Start to finish, my basement was handled with care and attention to detail. The result is just beautiful. Especially the floor! We look forward to many happy times in our new basement. The best part about it is my son is so happy with his “cool” space that a once difficult move is now something he looks forward to!

I am so happy I put my faith in Alure. We can’t wait to start our kitchen and bath projects. Thanks Alure for helping my son and I start a new chapter in our lives in such a positive way.

Sincerely,

M. M.

Word on the street is that Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is looking to come back to Long Island and apparently, they are still searching for the right Long Island family to feature on it’s show.

To be eligible: A family must own their own single family home and be able to show producers how a makeover will make a huge difference in their lives. Interested families or those who wish to nominate another family should e-mail a short description of their family story to:

longislandemhe@gmail.com

~~~~~
Nominations/Submissions must include:
• The names and ages of each member of the household
• A description of the major challenges within the home
• Explanation of why this family is deserving, heroic, or a positive role model in their community
• Photos of the family and a photo of the home
• Don’t forget to include a contact phone number
Here are some facts from the Peter Family Episode re-airing on CMT Friday 8/21 at 4:00 and 8:00. These are facts that you most likely wouldn’t gather from viewing the show:
peteralurebanner1) The Peter Family was the 4th family that Alure teamed up with the Extreme Design Team to help transform their lives.
2) The traditional “Braveheart Scene”, where the designers and volunteers march to the home for demo, this  was the first time the show did this in the dark and special lighting was called in to assist.
3) The home is located in a very congested part of Jamaica, Queens. This required the home to be torn down by hand peterroofinstead of utilizing heavy machinery. An added challenge for the crew to stick to the timeline.
4) Once demo was complete, it was discovered that the original home was never sitting on a foundation. This required us to arrange for an additional 35 yards of concrete be trucked in at a moments notice in order to provide a foundation for the new home. It is not unusaul for the need to call in some favors during the week of an Extreme Build.
petervitale5)  Families from previous Alure Extreme Builds (Lucy Ali – Alure episode #2 and John Vitale – Alure Episode #3) contributed to the efforts of this build. Lucy brought some home made food for the workers and John, along with his brother, contributed throughout the week on the job site.
6) To lighten things up a bit, the team of Alure Employees played a joke on President/CEO Sal Ferro. They had Sal’s wife call him and say the kids broke a brand new window in the back of his home while playing ball. Once he discovered the call was a joke, Sal literally fell to his knees in the middle of the job site.
This build was another great experience for a wonderful family. Members of the Peter Family also chipped in to assist with Alure’s next build to assist the Arena Family only a couple of weeks later.
itc-logoGreat news for homeowners! Owens Corning Sunsuites now qualify for a federal tax credit of up to $1500! Another great product from OC to save energy while adding comfort and value to your home. Check out this great news here: Owens Corning Tax Credit!
